It operates quietly in the real world, but is believed to control assets worth hundreds of billions of dollars, deeply shaping America’s history, politics, and social structure. In this episode, we will explore the origins and core beliefs of Mormonism—and why many see it as one of the least “traditional” religions on Earth. From an American farm boy with limited education—Joseph Smith—to a sacred text allegedly dictated in just 60 days and spanning roughly 300,000 words, the story is filled with mysteries that are impossible to ignore. The Book of Mormon not only describes Israelites migrating to the Americas and the rise and fall of an ancient “white” civilization, but also claims that after His resurrection and ascension, Jesus Christ descended to the Americas, appeared to local people, and taught them directly. The glowing messenger, the golden plates, the strange stones, and the translation ritual described in the narrative sound less like classic religious revelation—and more like a close encounter of the third kind.
